WHO: Let’s talk about depression – focus on older people - Katalyst HLS

Depression among older people is common. Yet is it often overlooked. Loneliness and loss of independence are among the causes. Depression can impact on people’s ability to carry out even the simplest everyday tasks, with sometimes devastating consequences for relationships with family and friends. At worst, depression can lead to suicide. Yet depression can be prevented and treated. A better understanding of depression will help reduce the stigma associated with the condition, and lead to more people seeking help. This short video, focusing on depression among older people, highlights some of the causes of depression in this age group and the importance of talking as the first step towards getting help. This video has been produced as part of the World Health Organization’s “Depression: let’s talk” campaign, which began on 10 October 2016 and runs for one year.
